Some Grand Theft Auto Online players received a special surprise this past weekend in the form of a mysterious in-game announcement. The announcement, which comes in the form of a HUD pop-up, teases the 2019 release of Grand Theft Auto 6.
The announcement message has been confirmed by multiple players on multiple platforms, slating the title for release next year and stating that pre-orders are now available. Also included is a link to the Rockstar Games website. So, is this announcement the real deal or just an elaborate hoax?
Though the message itself seems real, no other publicity surrounding the game has yet to be released. No website or other outside links to promotional materials exist, and Rockstar themselves have made no official comment or statement on the announcement or the game itself. The official Rockstar website, referenced in the announcement, makes no mention of Grand Theft Auto 6 or pre-orders.
In addition, the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 is also right around the corner. If this announcement is to be believed, this would mean that Rockstar has been working behind the scenes on a second massive triple-A title all while simultaneously developing Red Dead 2. Though not unheard of, it does seem highly unlikely that Rockstar would be able to keep the development of a second huge title entirely under wraps.
So, what to make of this? Though the announcement is indeed convincing, evidence points to this being nothing more than a hoax or hack of some kind. Whatever the case, it seems likely that Rockstar will be addressing these rumors in the coming days.
Whether the release of a sixth game is on the horizon or not, GTA Online players still have plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks. Rockstar’s new Guest List rewards will be coming into effect ahead of the much-anticipated Nightclub update.
Players who logged into the game prior to July 2nd will be seeing $300,000 added to their account before July 9th, with an additional sum between $100,000 and $350,000 added every week in July. That’s a whole lot of cash. Other rewards for Guest List members include a new vehicle and customization options, as well as new clothing options.
The Nightclub update, which adds new music and other content to the game, will allow players to control and run every aspect of their very own nightclub. The update is due out by the end of July.
